Rarely do I create a piece of art in one quick session in the studio. (maybe once?) Usually a piece undergoes iteration after iteration as I debate inside of myself about form and shape and contrast etc. Sometimes it gets painted over entirely.

It happens that I took a number of pictures of a piece as I worked on it so I'll share some of the changes with you here. (the even earlier beginnings of this piece can be found here.) Throughout the process, I was adding layers of color here and there with glazes.

Here is the first stopping point. There were many times in the days that followed when I wished I had just kept this one! This piece is a combination of papers and acrylic paints.

A few more shapes added plus some red. Hm.

Painting over a lot of the right side, adding a shape and drips.

White paint.

More white plus vertical lines and a trial of gold.

Removed a bunch of white with alcohol. Added the long curved line, white squiggles and black noise, plus some trial red squares.

Final piece with rearranged red squares - "First One Thing and Then Another." I bet you can guess why it got that name!
