The Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum recently exhibited 19th century quilts from Pennsylvania. My sister Les and I went to this wonderful show in July.

I have a few observations:

1. These quilts were HAND pieced and HAND quilted and they were complex! Some people today still hand sew entire quilts but most of us count ourselves blessed to have sewing machines and/or quilting machines, not to mention all the other sewing helps we now have. If we have a question about how to do a technique, we can just go to uTube and watch on video what to do. 19th century quilters were on  their own.

2. These quilts took A LOT OF TIME to make!

3. These quilts ARE NOT PERFECT. They are beautiful, they are works of art. And they have "mistakes." Not every point is pointed. Not every seam matches up exactly. It was refreshing to me. These days it seems like "perfection" is the name of the game in many quilt shows and sales. These pieces might not have made it into a modern show, but they should.
